It might be December but that doesn't stop me from going to the beach! My friend Amy and I love going but usually we frequent it during the summer months, however we both had time off work so decided to make a trip. Whilst an enjoyable day was still had, we realised a few necessities and adjustments were needed in the colder months compared to having a beach day in the summer.
So below, I've prepared some tips that hopefully mean we can learn from
our mistakes and can also prevent others from suffering from our frozen fate! Some may be more tongue in cheek that others... but useful none the same
1. Blankets, blankets, blankets
Between us we had 4 blankets, hoodies, scarves and a coat and we still could have done with more.
2. Double up on the bottom layer of your 'ground sheets'
Initially we were just using a waterproof picnic sheet as our base layer, however remembering a tip from somewhere, Amy suggested we double up by putting another blanket underneath us... 'two on the bottom is worth more than two on the top' were her words. Sceptically we gave it ago, and I can honestly say there was such a difference. I'm not sure what is was but all throughout the remainder of the day we couldn't help but comment of the improvement of our insulation.
3. Flasks
We brought our own bottles of water, but maybe a flask of tea, hot chocolate or soup may have been more beneficial. We looked on enviously as other groups of people poured steaming tea from their flasks. We also passed on the ice cream.
Although, if the theory of having hot drinks to cool you down in the summer is correct, maybe we should have gone for the ice cream!
4. It's the coast... it's going to be windy!
Despite the weather forecast being dry, and fairly warm for the time of year, I vastly underestimated the chill factor bought on by the wind. Thinking that 3 layers of clothing, one of which was a hoody, would be enough, I was not prepared for the, quite frankly, arctic blast that would surround us. Amy sensibly bought a coat and an additional jumper. In future, I will select my attire more appropriately, and invest in more layers. I did remember to double up on the socks!
P.S... a hairband could have been useful too.
5. Relish any sunshine
Although we weren't expecting wall to wall sunshine, the grey sky and choppy waves weren't an ideal scenic point. However, throughout the day for small periods of time, the sun managed to break through and by the end of the day blue sky was appearing. The moments of sunshine did add a positive (and slightly warmer) vibe to our day... even if it did cause squinty eyes!
6. Find (or bring) a wind breaker
We didn't bring any 'shelter' but managed to find a nice spot by some dunes. The wind was still whipping around us, however we found a big difference when leaning back into the dunes compared to sitting upright.
7. Snack regularly
What better excuse for a picnic than a day at the beach? To maintain our energy and levels throughout the day we brought a variety of food supplies featuring sandwiches, carrots, humous, cheese straws, satsumas, melon and cake... a balanced and fuel replenishing diet wouldn't you say?!?!
Hopefully on our future beach days we can take heed of our own advice and adapt these tips for whatever the weather.
Feel free to comment your own tips.
Much love
