My Solo Trip to the Maldives

The Maldives has always been a dream destination of mine, yet one I thought I'd never get to: the pristine beaches, clear water and romantic setting seemed like an ideal place to spend time with someone. The catch? I didn't have anyone to go with.

In a moment of madness, and a tempting holiday deal, I spontaneously booked a 3 night stay in an overwater bungalow by myself. Would I get lonely? Would I resent all the couples there? Would I be sick of being by myself after a day? Actually no! (Was I pissed off at having to pay a huge single supplement? Yes! But you can't have everything!)

While I could have stayed longer, 2 1/2 days was definitely enough to really get a feel of the Maldives, indulge in complete luxury and relaxation and enjoy all the islands have to offer. I got to get up whenever I wanted (reluctantly, I set my alarm early each day so as to make the most of each day, ate whatever combination I wanted from the buffet dinner (lasagne and curry anyone?), and could just go wherever I wanted over the island. Yes I would have loved to have gone with someone, but this was a pretty good compromise to experience a place I'd always wanted to go.

At the airport and on the plane journey out there, I got chatting to some couples, so my fear of being completely ignored was eliminated. I did get some quizzical looks and chants of 'really!' when stating I was going on my own, but that actually made me more 'proud' to do something different and not be put off by travelling solo to someone renowned for couples... I definitely got to know how to use the self-timer on my photo pretty well...
