Last month I went to New York and took a 'risk' by flying with the budget airline JetBlue... and I have to say, I was incredibly impressed. The main reason I chose them was because they flew from Gatwick airport, which is easier to get to for me than Heathrow. However, the perks don't stop there.
JetBlue pride themselves on having the most leg- room in 'Coach' (economy) and even have first class Mint suites which looked fabulous. I was tempted to upgrade, as the price was fairly reasonable but I wanted to keep a smaller budget for this trip so opted for economy. However this was absolutely fine as there really was loads of leg room.
On the seat waiting for us when we boarded the plan was an amenity kit in a silicon reusable pouch, including socks, lip balm, face cream and a mint. There was also a thick blanket which completely covered me and was really warm.
There was so much that was good about the airline that I can't decide what was my favourite thing they offered.
Firstly, their meal choice selection was brilliant. While I don't usually mind plane food, JetBlue offer you the opportunity to 'customise' your meal. There is an interactive feature on the TV screen that allows you to select one of three main meals; 2 meat and one vegetarian and up to 2 side dishes from a choice of three.
I went for meatballs and rice for the main and carrots as a side which was really yummy. Pudding, a tub of ice cream, was brought round later on during the flight and there was a snack basket at the back of the plane which you could help yourself to throughout the flight. Being able to select your meal was a great way to add a personal touch to the flight, and also kept us busy while the flight was boarding.
The next thing that was great about the flight was the choice of films available to watch. The inner kid in me was thrilled to find Disney's Mulan so of course I had to watch that! I also watched Titanic and half of Finding Nemo. Also available were films like Bridesmaids, 3 of the Harry Potters, Shawshank Redemption and many others. The flight needed to be longer to get through them all!
Finally, JetBlue are the only airline to offer FREE wifi throughout the whole flight. It was really easy to connect to, reliable throughout the whole flight and it was lovely to keep in contact with friends throughout the flight. Other airlines, watch and learn!!!
The only issue I had was with the check in process at the airport. While you can check in online, I prefer to do it at the airport, however we had to use check in machines which required a lot of faff and documents to be uploaded. It took a long time and I much prefer a traditional check in desk where you can talk to someone!
Currently JetBlue only fly to New York and Boston direct from London, however it would be fab if they extended their routes to other parts of the US. Fingers crossed, one day this will happen.
